Christa Hughes, Australia’s patron saint of powerful pipes and PVC playsuits, is all set to lead the Darwin Railway Club astray with her cask-matured, acclaimed cabaret, Beer Drinking Woman.
Hughes is widely known for her outrageous onstage theatrics as singer for rock band Machine Gun Fellatio and ringmistress for Circus Oz. But before these incarnations, she penned Beer Drinking Woman after returning to Australia havin spent much of her twenties steeped in the alternative cabaret scenes of New York and London.
Beer Drinking Woman revolves voice and piano-driven songs around the many faces of alcohol. “I didn’t want the show to be too heavy. There’s not a huge message in it,” Hughes explains. “But,” she adds with a little of her characteristic cheek, “I would say most people in the audience throughout Australia – and probably throughout the world – totally relate to what I’m singing about.”
