Down The Track - November

EVERY NOVEMBER, Watch This Space gets a bit Lofty. This year is no exception.

By Zoya Godoroja-Prieckaerts

Named in honour of Pamela Lofts, one of the founding members of Watch This Space (WTS), The Loftys is, not only an annual award, but also a night to celebrate art, give recognition to a special individual from our Central Australian community, and to see out the end of a big year.

While the ceremonious giving of the prestigious and coveted Lofty Award is the main affair, that’s not all WTS has to offer. As always, there is live entertainment from local artists and delicious food made by loving home chefs, all of which is most likely followed by a real good boogie sesh, as seems to be the annual tradition.

Above all, the night is always surrounded by an air of community, and lots and lots of love.

On top of this, WTS is launching some limited edition merchandise. The grassroots organisation has commissioned a select few brilliant local artists to consider the legacy and position of WTS, treating the humble t-shirt as an art object itself. With a limited run of 25 prints each, these are sure to sell like hotcakes…

As for the Lofty winner, they receive a locally designed commemorative trophy commissioned by WTS, a lifetime membership to the organisation, inclusion in its 2021 program, and a $1500 cash prize. What a haul.

Though we don’t yet know who this special someone is, we can be sure that they’ll have played a significant role in the ever-evolving creative culture of Central Australia, and that their achievements in the arts and contribution to the community are worthy of celebration. If you know someone in Central Australia deserving of such an award, head to the WTS website to nominate them.

The Loftys is free for anyone and everyone, welcoming new and old lovers and acquaintances of Watch This Space, as well as anyone wandering by. If you’re down in Mparntwe/Alice Springs at the end of November, don’t miss this much-anticipated event. It’s a hoot!
