Darwin Pride Festival

In 2017 the Darwin Pride Festival marched for LGBTQIA+ rights and this year is a celebration of unity.

After the overwhelming success and support for marriage equality, this year’s festival will be all about celebrating the community with more than 25 events across 10 days.

Pride Festival secretary Andrea Wicking says this year’s theme is unity, to reflect the passion and support in the NT.

“We were all extremely overwhelmed with the support, which came from the general community in 2017 and has continued this year,” she says.

“This year we have decided the theme unity because we felt unified as a community here in the NT, and it’s not just the LGBTQIA+ community, but also the wider community.

“We want to make the week about a celebration of where we’ve come from, and showcase the support in the wider Darwin community.

The festival has a huge range of events, including opening and closing parties, family and youth events, and plenty of entertainment.

One of the 2018 highlights will be a panel discussion titled Transparent.

“The Transparent panel discussion is to attract interest from our trans youth, families and allies,” Wicking says.

“Darwin Pride wants to make sure it’s supporting all of the LGBTQI+ community and it’s thrilled to be organising this event.”
