A Midsummer Night's Dream

It's no surprise that Shakespeare's most delightful and fantastical play found further life as a ballet.

Set to a romantic score by Felix Mendelssohn, the Melbourne City Ballet brings the story to life through a lush production featuring pretty costumes, impish humour and magical scenery.

“Action, comedy, drama and, of course, a splash of fairy magic combine to make this the perfect ballet for people to bring their families along to see,” says Melbourne City Ballet Artistic Director Michael Pappalardo.

Like the play, the ballet is set in both the lavish court of ancient Athens and the magical realm of Fairyland, and follows four interconnected plots.

A love quadrangle between characters Hermia, Lysander, Demetrius and Helena occupies the human world, while in Fairyland the fairy queen Titiania, fairy king Oberon and the trickster Puck cause mischief for the mortals.

How the dancer who plays Nick Bottom gets around stage after his head is turned into a donkey’s will be an entertaining spectacle.

With love potions, changelings and rude mechanicals, the weird and wonderful elements of A Midsummer Night’s Dream make this production bound to enchant.
