Shirley Purdie is a senior Gija artist and began painting her Country in the early 1990s. She is known for her richly textured natural earth pigments on canvas. Using ochres collected on her own Country, Purdie’s work draws on traditional Gija stories and Ngarranggarni (Dreaming). Concentrating on both contemporary and traditional narratives, Purdie presents an outstanding selection of works celebrating life at Warmun. It is an exhibition of the traditional juxtaposed with the modern.
