Sustainable House Day

High energy and water prices are just two reasons why a sustainable house is an increasingly attractive prospect for Top Enders. The others are that sustainable homes make the most of our tropical environment and gardens.

The best way to learn and experience what a sustainable house looks and feels like is on the popular Sustainable House Day, an open-home tour organised by the Environment Centre NT’s CoolMob group.

This year’s selection of homes offers a wide range of examples to inspire, including stylish architecturally-designed houses, solar powered rooftops, abundant gardens and low-budget modifications that everyone can try.

If you’ve ever admired a terrifically sustainable-looking house and garden in the northern suburbs or wanted a gander at a tropical eco-friendly villa, this is your chance to get an up-close look.

Visitors will tour each home, see what the homeowner or architect has done to create a beautiful, efficient and comfortable tropical home, and have the opportunity to ask questions and see demonstrations.

Minimal energy use is a key requirement for sustainable homes in our climes, so there will be a lot of cooling tips to pick up on, as well as renovation ideas, home-grown innovation and garden design.
