Sandbar Cricket

The biggest battle on sand is back with Variety NT ready to reclaim the Sandbar Cricket trophy from the Darwin Trailer Boat Club.

Variety NT general manager Katrina Fong Lim says her best position on the pitch is usually the side-lines, but she’ll be getting out there hitting it for six.

“I know some very significant cricketers who have given me a lot of advice,” she laughs.

“I haven’t done an awful lot of playing cricket, but I have done a few picnics at the sandbar and it’s a really unique venue.”

The annual cricket match began as a social event at the Darwin Trailer Boat Club.

“The members used to trawl over to the sandbar and have a hit and a giggle and eventually they started raising money for Variety, and that’s how we became involved,” Fong Lim says.

Cricketers can catch a SeaLink ferry across to the sandbar or anchor up their own vessel for a day on the sand.

There will be food and drink available on the sandbar, and a raffle and other fundraising activities will help children in need in the NT.

This year, Variety NT has a funding goal of $200,000 to build an inclusive playground at the Jingili Water Gardens.

“An all inclusive playground that allows children to play together is really important for families with children with disabilities because quite often they have other children as well, and this means they can all play together on the same equipment,” Fong Lim says.

“Play is such a vital part of children’s development and if we can have a place where everyone can play together it breaks down a lot of barriers.”
