The Gift of Giving

Christmas isn’t just a time to share the love with your own family – each year Territorians come together to support others to make sure everyone has the chance to share in the festive spirit.

There are plenty of ways to get involved, whether it’s donating food to FoodBank and The Salvation Army, or leaving a present under the K-Mart Christmas Tree.

Salvation Army regional officer Captain Richard Parker says they have lots of services available over the festive season and beyond, but every year their Anula site sees about 350 families come through seeking assistance with food and Christmas presents.

“We set up a mini supermarket so people can collect food so they can put on a Christmas meal,” he says.

Non-perishable donations, including canned food such as soups, vegetables and fruits; pasta and rice, cereals and baby food – as well as Christmas goodies, such as puddings, and long life cream and custard, are all gratefully received.

“It means the difference between kids being able to celebrate like everyone else, or not.”
