One Tropical Day feat. Grinspoon

We are well and truly into the Dry season and Aussie rock heavyweights Grinspoon are dropping by to help Top Enders celebrate. They visit the NT as a part of their Guide To Better Living Tour and swing by the Darwin Ski Club to headline the first 2017 edition of One Tropical Day.

By Chelsea Heaney.

It's been 20 years since Grinspoon’s debut album Guide To Better Living topped the charts, spending 36 weeks in the ARIA Top 50. To celebrate, the band are emerging from a four year hiatus to play across the country. Grab your camp chairs and picnic blankets for this great live music event, complete with beautiful ocean views.

Off The Leash had a quick chat with Grinspoon drummer Kristian Hopes in the lead up to their massive tour.

How does it feel to be playing together again after a hiatus of four years?

It's all starting to feel good! We came back together a year or so ago for a small run of shows with Cold Chisel and all was fun, but this will be a fairly big tour so I guess we'll see how it goes. You never know, we might end up doing something again in the future.

What have you all been up to since you went your own ways in 2013?

We've all had different things going on outside of the band. Phil has been touring solo for a while, Joe's been doing some production work on music festivals, Pat opened a clothing store and I've been running a commercial handyman company.

What can fans expect from this live performance?

We're playing the album start to finish with a sprinkling of other songs. It's going to be a pretty up-tempo show.

The band's had a celebrated career, what have been the real highlights for you?

We've had many memorable times. For me, getting our first gold record for Guide to Better Living and winning an ARIA were pretty cool!

After more than 20 years experience, what would you say to musicians getting into the industry today?

Write lots of songs and play as many shows as you can. You never know what opportunities will come your way if you put yourself out there.
