The Superjesus

20 years on from their platinum selling album Sumo hitting number two on the ARIA charts, The Superjesus are back with an anniversary edition of their celebrated 1998 debut – and they are playing the whole thing in Darwin this November.

Bass guitarist Stu Rudd spoke to Off The Leash.

If you could go back 25 years and talk to your younger self, what would you say about the journey ahead?
Get ready for the biggest ride of your life. It’s not always gonna be pretty but there will be some great adventures along the way!

Who was inspiring you musically back in the 90s?
We were very inspired by a lot of Australian bands – You Am I is the first band that comes to my mind.

What’s it been like re-releasing Sumo? Has it been a massive trip down memory lane for you?
Actually, it’s been quite amazing and I think listening to the album for the first time in years has brought back so many emotions and memories. It’s a great trip down memory lane.

You’re coming to play for us this November – you must have played in Darwin before? Any fond memories?
We can’t wait. We were there not so long ago for One Tropical Day with Grinspoon. Coming from the southern states, the first thing that’s always confronting about Darwin is the heat, and it’s something we have to get used to. We’ve had some great times playing in Darwin though, it’s always a great audience!

Tell us about the show – will there be some new music amongst the hits?
This show is two hours long and we are playing everything from Sumo. The entire album. We are also playing some rarities as well as the hits so it’s gonna be an epic night.
