The Supper Club

The Lucky Bat is slowly transforming from a trendy cafe to an evening saloon with live music and big plans on the horizon.

Co-owner Justin Schmidt says after spending time upgrading the infrastructure of the venue, it’s now time to test the acoustics.

This month The Bat is launching The Supper Club on Friday evenings full of chilled vibes and good tunes.

“The Supper Club is something I’ve been wanting to do for ages,” Schmidt says.

“We’re after a nightclub loungey feel - not banging beats but a club atmosphere that’s driven by conversation and an opportunity to mix and have good food and drinks.

“We’ll dim the lights, lower the shutters and it will be a lock-in feel.”

The music will be programmed by guest selectors each week, who will give an insight into their personal music collection.

“They’ll share interesting musical journeys that they want to present to people,” Schmidt says.

“Everyone’s got a love and a taste in music, we’re not after people’s mixing skills, we’re after their selection showing us a nuanced interpretation of what they like.”

The musical evenings are a new addition, with the already success-ful Bat Sessions kicking off last month on Sunday evenings.

“At the moment we’re doing Bat Sessions inside The Bat because it’s too hot outside, but eventually we’re going to build a stage out the back and we want people to actively go and see the music,” Schmidt says.

“People often very passively take in the music, but we don’t want it to be an accompaniment - we want it to be the main focus.”

Bat Sessions features a range of musicians, with regulars including David Garnham and Sam Carmody.
