Around the World in Eighty Minutes

DARWIN SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA (DSO) returns in 2020 with this international feast of sound.

From traditional Japanese drumming to American barn dance music, DSO’s maiden performance for the year takes you to lands you could only hope to one day visit.

DSO’s Artistic Director and Chief Conductor Jonathan Tooby says he’s excited to bring such a diverse piece to Darwin.

“We have tango items from South America, Bohemian Gypsy sounds, Viennese waltz, American hoedown. One minute the audience will be listening to an adapted traditional Chinese piece, and the next, they’ll be taken to Norway with ‘In the Hall of the Mountain King’ or even listening to a collage of different music from the far corners of the world.”

Not only is the DSO returning in 2020 with this big stage extravaganza – after seven years, the DSO also returns to its original home on the Darwin Entertainment Centre stage.

“It’s an ideal space – everyone is really excited! Around the World in Eighty Minutes is a wonderful introduction, and to see an 80-strong symphony orchestra is a real spectacle.”

Accompanying you on this magical musical journey around the world is local entertainer, host, and all-round nice guy, Shalom Kaa.

“I don’t come from an orchestral background, so for me, I wanted to approach this as an opportunity to reach out to audience members who may not be as familiar with classical music, and take them on a journey around the world,” Kaa says.

“The finale is very Australian – very well-known and very patriotic – the audience won’t need any prompting to sing and clap along!”
