Move

Several generations of dancers and musicians will make history in Darwin with a new collaboration.

The Arafura Collective, Tracks Dance, and the Darwin School of Ballet have joined forces for a new show, Move, set by the backdrop of Pee Wee’s at the Point.

Claire Kilgariff, from The Arafura Collective, says the music is all based on the idea of being moved.

“The music is all about music that moves you – emotionally, intellectually and physically,” she says.

“Some of the pieces will have dancers and others will just be stand alone.”

Kilgariff says they’ve selected a wide range of music, including some pieces that have never been performed live in Darwin.

“When people come to our concerts they always get to hear chamber music they probably wouldn’t have the opportunity to hear in Darwin generally,” she says.

“There’s a wonderful flamenco piece, ‘Ritmo Jondo’ by Carlos Surinach, with trumpets, clarinets, percussion and hand clappers – it’s a very amazing piece of music that I don’t think has ever been played in Darwin before.”

The collaboration will see dancers of all ages join together on stage.

“We’re very keen on working in-tergenerationally and encouraging all ages to engage with arts and culture, so this collaboration epitomises that,” Kilgariff says.

“This is also our first performance at Pee Wee’s, and we’ve got great plans for the future to do some collaborations around food and wine and music by the sea.”
