I've Been Meaning To Ask You

What does it feel like to fall in love? What does beer taste like? What’s your biggest regret? I’ve Been Meaning to Ask You gives young people the opportunity to ask these kinds of big questions from the people who are supposed to have the answers – adults.

Created by Queensland-based performance collective, The Good Room, the show’s Top End iteration was built by local young people in collaboration with Corrugated Iron Youth Arts for Darwin Festival.

As part of the show’s development, the cast of nine to 13-year-olds came up with a series of their most burning questions, which were then combined with the queries of other groups of young people across the country, and posted online for adults around the world to respond to.

“There’s everything from the divine to the absurd,” explains Corrugated Iron Youth Arts’ Kyle Walmsley.

The cast’s response to the answers they received forms the basis of the show – expect to have some of your unexamined assumptions about the world turned upside down and subjected to scrutiny!

“Their capacity to understand and address the problems and issues of the world is just mind-blowing… The show as a whole is a reminder that young people are capable for a lot more than we tend to typically give them credit for.”

The show puts young people’s voices front and centre, but an extraordinary creative team is also carefully crafting the theatrical elements to create a riotous, dynamic combination of dance, performance, lighting and projection.

At a time when the younger generation has been forced to rapidly adjust to some huge global shifts, it’s never been more timely or important to hear what they have to say. So sit back and take it all in, as they take to the mic!
