Dive In Movie

Splash into the school holidays and ring in NT Youth Week with a unique cinema experience at Launch Darwin’s inaugural Dive In Movie.

Producer Jack Buckley says it’s the perfect way to kick off the school holidays with short films from local filmmakers and a feature film under the stars.

“It’s a great way to unwind after a busy first term for all the students around Darwin,” he says.

“It’ll just be a lovely, relaxing evening.”

Shorts by local young filmmakers will screen before the feature - including You Do You and Paws for Naught.

Buckley says he approached  some young filmmakers, including Thomas Midena, Nat Kelly and Lexi Gregory, to share their flicks, as it was the perfect occasion to showcase their talents.

“The short films were produced written and directed by local young people and we really want to  promote their hard work in the community,” he says.

“The films are also relevant to the demographic at the event.

“You Do You follows a high school aged girl and the typical adversity that a young woman might experience at school and in life, and it plays serious themes in a humorous manner.”

So what’s the feature film following the shorts? That’s up to the public to decide.

Voting is open through Launch Darwin’s social media and will close on Friday April 5.

While Dive in Movie is a first for Darwin, Buckley says the poolside cinema idea was a tried-and-tested format in other cities and he is amazed it hasn’t been done for NT Youth Week before.

“The Launch team and I were toiling with various ideas that were a bit innovative and something that Darwin hadn’t seen before,” he said.

“We’ve seen this event done in  other cities around Australia and we thought why aren't we doing this in Darwin? It makes perfect sense.”
